The last 5 weeks has gone by
quickly. I played four weeks in a row starting in Pella, IA and
ending in Chicago at the Illinois Open. Overall I have been
pleased with the way the last month has gone. I played alot of
solid golf where the only thing missing for some great golf was a
few breaks here and there. The Waterloo Open was a fun experience
and with only two rounds, a cut after the first round, I learned
quickly that pars were not going to make the cut. I never got
much going and failed to make the cut after a first round of 75.
While in Waterloo I stayed at Abby and Jon Skrivseth's house,
Ali's sister and brother-in-law, and Jon came out and caddied for
me in the first round. Although it was a short weekend, we still
had a good time and I was greatful for their hospitality.
After the Waterloo Open, I headed
south to Cedar Rapids to play at Hunters Ridge in the Greater
Cedar Rapids Open. I have always enjoyed playing "Hunters" and
have a few good memories from playing tournaments there when I was
at Ambrose. I opened with a solid round of 70 but followed that
up with a up and down 75, but still squeaked in the cut line to
play in the final round. I put together a good final round to
finish in a tie for 23rd. The weekend in Cedar Rapids was fairly
relaxing, I had a chance to meet up with an old St. Ambrose
Teammate, Andy Kahl. Andy and his Fiance let me stay at their
condo in Cedar Rapids for the weekend, it was nice to have a place
to stay while I was in the area.
A week after the Cedar Rapids Open
I played in one of my favorite tournaments of the summer, The
Illinois Open. The Illinois Open is a tournament that I have
played in four years now but never finished higher than 30th.
This year I really felt good heading into the week and was hoping
for big things at the Glen Club in Glenveiw, IL. However, mother
nature had a different idea for the week and play was suspended
three times during the tournament. Due to all the rain that the
course had gotten in a two day stretch they actually had to
shorten the 54-hole tournament to a 36-hole tournament cutting the
field of 162 to 78 after the first round. The course played long
and extremely wet, but still very score-able for the field. I was
very happy with my play over the two days and had very little
miscues throughout the tournament. I opened with a even par 72
and fi nished with a one under 71 which proved to be the 11th best
score of the final round. I would have liked to say that I
finished higher in everyone of the last four tournaments, but
regardless I am still happy to say that I made the cut in 3 of the
4 and had a top 5 finish in there as well.
I need to thank so many, who have
been so supportive over the summer months. Just last week in
Chicago, I stayed with friend Nick Stripling and my Cousin, Dr.
Carrie Dunphy, who will be getting married this spring. They gave
me keys to their place and let me come and go as I pleased. Nick
even took a half day to carry my bag for round one, and cooked
some killer spaghetti for dinner. Thanks also to Joe Kreeger who
came out on his vacation to carry my bag in round two and play
Yahtzee with me during the rain delays. We made the most of some
long boring hours of hanging out at a golf course.
Also, I would like to thank the staff at Davenport Country Club for giving me the time off to play in these tournaments. I am very thankful to have the opportunity to play in events in the Midwest, that are close to home.
